If you want your performance car to seat five comfortably, send power to all four wheels, or have some meaningful amount of luggage capacity, you might have to decide between a few options that compromise performance with another goal. If you just need two seats and an engine, however, you have a pretty excellent and widespread set of options. Here are the best two-seaters to choose from.

1

2023 Mazda MX-5

Price: $28,050

The current ND-generation MX-5 is the Miata formula nearing perfection. The driving experience is as good as it has ever been, all in a more modern and more stylish package than ever before. It stacks up well against the stellar Toyota GR86, too.

All the sports car you will ever need

2023 Nissan Z

Nissan

Price: $40,990

The 2023 Nissan Z is is a big step forward in the design department for a car that has been refreshed just twice since 2002. The latest Z bumps up power output, and that output gets even higher in the newly-announced Nismo variant. Unfortunately, that car cannot be optioned with the manual transmission that contributes so much to the standard car's standout mechanical-over-digital feel.

Still an analog sports car.

2023 GR Corolla Morizo Edition

Price: $49,900

The ultimate Corolla is an understatement. Toyota's wilder Morizo Edition of the wild GR Corolla keeps the standard car's impressive three-cylinder turbocharged engine, but it subtracts the rear seats. That leaves a hot hatchback with just two seats, all-wheel drive, and a whole lot to like.

The prophecy-fulfilling hot hatchback.

2023 Chevrolet Corvette

DW Burnett

Price: $66,300

The first mid-engined Corvette has been around long enough that these cars are starting to become as common as every other Corvette. This is a tremendous win for the entire automotive world, because the C8-generation car is excellent at everything it sets out to do. The high-revving Z06 is our 2023 Performance Car of the year.

Yes, the Z06 is the real deal.

2023 Porsche 718

Porsche

Price: $68,300

Both the Cayman and Boxster variants of the model now known as 718 continue to provide an excellent overall sports car package at a relatively low entry price. New top-of-the-line performance variants, the Cayman GT4 RS and Boxster Spyder RS, add the world-class flat-six from the 911 GT3.

The GT4 RS should be terrifying. It's not.

2023 Porsche 911 GT3

Price: $182,900

Yes, the 911 has long been a 2+2 rather than a two-seater. The GT3 and GT3 RS are a bit of a loophole, as the performance editions take out the car's traditional rear bench to save on weight and optimize performance. The most recent model is our 2022 Performance Car of the Year.

Still a masterpiece.

2023 BMW Z4

BMW

Price: $53,600

Just as the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ were developed together, the BMW Z4's latest generation was paired with the modern Toyota Supra. These two cars are a little more different, particularly with the BMW being available only as a hard-top convertible. That makes it the more compelling of the pair, although it lacks the new optional manual that suddenly makes the Supra all the more interesting.

Real sports car cred.
